Logan Regional Medical Center Earns ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
November 15, 2024
Logan Regional Medical Center received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit group that sets standards for excellence in patient safety and care. Logan Regional is the only hospital in the state of West Virginia to earn an “A” grade during Leapfrog’s Fall 2024 assessments, which were announced on November 15.
Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. Only 32% of the approximately 3,000 hospitals reviewed nationwide earn Leapfrog’s “A” grade. Logan Regional improved from its “B” grade earned in Leapfrog’s Spring 2024 review.
“It takes a lot of work and commitment from the entire team at a hospital to adopt best practices and create a culture of safety that is so elite that it earns the prestigious ‘A’ grade from Leapfrog,” said David Brash, CEO of Logan Regional. “We’ve gradually improved our grade over the years and to be the only hospital in West Virginia to attain the top mark is quite an honor for our hospital and our team. This elite designation should give patients even more confidence that when they come to Logan Regional, they will receive high-quality, compassionate care in a safe environment.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Logan Regional Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Logan Regional, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog honor continues a string of positive developments at Logan Regional. In April, the hospital's advanced wound care center was honored as a Center of Distinction by Healogics, a recognition celebrating the Center's high patient satisfaction and clinical success in wound healing. In January, the hospital welcomed its inaugural class of rural general surgery residents to its unique program in partnership with Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and the Marshall Health Consortium. And also in January, Logan Regional was awarded Advanced Primary Stroke Center Certification by The Joint Commission, and that same month it unveiled its renovated, state-of-the-art Primary Care Facility.
“We continue to innovate and invest in our hospital to make sure we provide the care our patients need when they need it, and close to home,” said Brash. “At the same time, we remain focused on patient safety and high-quality care, and validations from the likes of Leapfrog tell us we are on the right track in our efforts to advance the health and well-being of our community.”
