Road to Recovery | Rocky Adkins
March 4, 2024
On January 8th, 2024, Rocky Adkins suffered a stroke, causing immobility on his left side. After being treated at a different hospital, he considered his options for rehab and chose to come back close to home to Logan Regional Medical Center.
Rocky arrived at Logan Regional Medical Center’s inpatient rehab department on January 12th with no motion in his left side, unable to walk or move his left arm. He began therapy that same day with the team he would work with for the next four weeks: Krysta Bowens, an occupational therapist; Alyssa Adkins, a speech therapist; Maria Ferrell, a physical therapist; Megan Satterfield, an occupational therapist; and several other clinicians. They worked with him for at least three hours each day, helping him regain strength, coordination, and mobility so that he could one day return home and resume the activities of everyday life.
Despite the daunting challenges that stroke survivors often face, Rocky's resilience shone brightly throughout his rehabilitation journey. With a personalized treatment plan designed to address his specific needs and goals, Rocky tackled each day with unwavering determination. From intensive physical therapy sessions to refining his cognitive skills through occupational therapy, Rocky embraced every aspect of his rehabilitation with courage and perseverance.
“Rocky has worked so hard and has come so far, he is such an inspiration to everyone,” said Krysta Bowens, Occupational Therapist at Logan Regional Medical Center.
After four weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, Rocky exited LRMC able to walk (aided by his home walker), climb stairs, move his arm and fingers, and show much improvement in his speech and facial appearance, all thanks to the hard work of his therapists.
“My expectations are that I’m going to be 100% before I quit, and I’m not quitting until I get to 100%,” said Rocky. “It’s just a matter of strength, and that’s why I have chosen to continue with outpatient therapy at Logan Regional Medical Center too.”
Rocky was leaving LRMC and was ready to head back to work the same afternoon. He works diligently as the Executive Director of the Logan County Development Authority and just recently helped secure 6.8 million dollars of funding that will be used for the Chief Logan Resort and Rec Center.
“I am so glad that I chose to come to Logan Regional for treatment,” said Rocky. I couldn’t have asked for better care, and it was so convenient for my family to come and visit. I truly don’t think I could’ve gotten better care or treatment at another facility.”
